It's a Tough Job, But Someone's Gotta Do It


So Carlos wants me to write a post today.  He bought a few international beers from The World Market to try some of the different flavors and brew techniques. What do I know about beer? Not a whole lot actually.  However, I am someone who appreciates a cold beer on a warm day, a cold beer on a cold day, a cold beer in front of the t.v. when any football game is on . . . o.k., a cold beer just about anytime.  Much to my husband's dismay, I love the flavors of beer and enjoy having one every now and then. So, I volunteered to be the guinea pig in this taste test because I am such a wonderfully supportive wife.

We taste-tested four different styles of beer from four different countries. Peroni from Italy, Smithwick's from Ireland, Heineken from Holland and Bitburger from Germany. Having tasted Heineken before, I had a reference for what to expect. Compared to the other beers, it is the lightest flavor in my opinion.  I think this beer would be good served with a lot of different foods. I don't think the taste is too overpowering; it would be a favorite for those who don't drink beer that often.


The beer from Italy, Peroni, had a distinct bitter taste from the very get go.  It was similar in color and mildness to Heineken, but the bitter taste could be a turn-off to some.  It was my least favorite of the four.



Smithwick's, the beer from Ireland, was a dark brew that immediately appealed to all my senses.  The color was as rich as the flavor.  It was bold, strong and I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor from the first sip.  I probably wouldn't serve this beer to everyone, because most people don't appreciate a darker beer. Just like most people don't like really strong coffee, dark beer is for those who like intense flavors.  Believe it or not, Carlos and I actually agreed that we both appreciated this beer the most. We usually share opposite tastes in food and drink, but this time we both voted the same.

Bitburger was my second favorite and Carlos liked it a lot too. It's full of rich flavor like the Smithwick's, but not as strong.  Bitburger Premium Beer is Germany’s no. 1 draught beer and I think I would probably choose this brew when I am not in the mood for as much heavy flavor as the Smithwick's.



Needless to say, sampling the beer gave me an instant craving for pork rinds for a snack!  It also reinforced what I probably already knew all along . . . dark beer is my first choice because it does contain such bold flavors.  Just for reference, the type of barley and the individual roasting time determines the flavor and color.

But don't take just my word for it.  Let your adventurous spirit lead you to try your own selection of different beer to see what speaks to your tastebuds.

P.S.  Don't forget the pork rinds!

We used to live close to Bitburg. Our neighbour there, Udo, works for the brewery. I am telling you, there was always Bitburger in the house.
